DeAnn Smallwood Lets a Character Speak For Her

Hi, I’m Ben and I couldn’t resist talking to you about Montana Man. When DeAnn asked me if I would, I hesitated, but then agreed. You see, Montana Man is about me.

When Wisteria pulled me out of the Colorado River more dead than alive from spending too much time in the prison’s notorious Dark Cell, where the guards often dropped scorpions down the roof on me, my life truly began. I’d just been released from Yuma Territorial Prison, often called Hell Hole, for being a stupid kid and railroaded there for a crime I didn’t commit. When I say stupid, you have only to read Montana Star to familiarize yourself with another prank I pulled on my brother Jarrett years ago. The difference is, that one had a happy ending. Well…come to think of it, so did the one in Montana Man. I met my one true love, acquired a precocious daughter, and got to fulfill my dream of practicing medicine. Thanks to Aries, my doctor sister-in-law you met in Montana Star, and the prison doctor, I was qualified.

I almost blew that privilege when I refused to treat the man who tried to get me hanged, broke my ribs by kicking me with his snakeskin boots, and subsequently got me sent to Yuma. Heck, he’d also kidnapped Wisteria. Can you blame me? He’d been shot by the sheriff in a show down when caught cattle rustling. Thanks to Rose, Wisteria’s sister, (you’ll get to know her in Montana Rose) finding a note, the posse and I got there in time to prevent a gunfighter from killing my wonderful Wisteria.

But hey, I can’t tell you everything here. All I can say is read Montana Man. I’m not proud of hurting my family like I did by letting them think I was dead, but I am proud of the man I became.

I mean it when I say my greatest pleasure next to writing is having my books read and enjoyed. There are many more stories just waiting to be written.
