Highlighting Historical Romance with Jasmine Hill
My novel, Lillian’s Light Horseman encompasses particular aspects of my husband’s family history. His grandfather was a decorated Light Horseman during WWI and by all accounts quite a ladies man.
The Australian Light Horse were mounted infantry often selected for their excellent riding skills and marksmanship, many of them coming from rural and outback areas. Their uniforms were distinguished by distinctive slouch hats with vibrant emu plumes. The legend of the emu feathers originated by the fact that they were such excellent horsemen, they could ride alongside a fast running emu and pluck the breast feather from the bird, which they would then use to adorn their hat. My hero, William Cartwright would have worn such a slouch hat with an abundant plume of emu feathers.
As was common with returning Australian WWI veterans at the time, my husband’s grandfather was allotted a 50,000 acre land settlement in Western New South Wales which he turned into a successful sheep station. My husband grew up on this outback sheep station where the nearest neighbours were more than an hour’s drive away. He attended school of the air and in the afternoons assisted on the property — shooting, mustering and shearing sheep.
The Australian outback, albeit largely desolate and uninhabited, has inspired authors, poets and artists for decades. It’s extreme habitat and wilderness has formed the basis of numerous literary works and has shaped many a painter’s artistic expression.
There’s something almost mystical about the tremendous expanses of baked earth, the striking golden sunsets and the unique animals that inhabit and thrive in such an environment. It’s unpredictable, dangerous and wildly beautiful.
The Australian outback and the stories surrounding it told by my husband’s family provided much of the inspiration for Lillian’s Light Horseman.
