Did you know that the oldest Saint Patrick’s Day parade, at least in the world took place in Florida in 1601?
The parade in Philadelphia just celebrated 250 years, dating to 1771. New York and Boston’s parades date back even earlier. Evidence recently unearthed in the General Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain, indicate that residents of Saint Augustine, Florida gathered for a procession in honor of San Patricio accompanied by a cannon salute in March of 1601. The previous year there is record of the cannon salute, but no word about a parade.
