Highlighting Historical Romance with Sherry Ewing and Berwick Castle
Thank you Caroline for highlighting me on your history blog today. For any of your readers who don’t know me, I’m Sherry Ewing and I write historical and time travel romances to awaken the soul one heart at a time.
With a new release just around the corner, I thought I’d take you back to where I got my inspiration for my whole medieval and time travel series. I had barely finished writing my first manuscript when a castle on a hill took shape in my mind. Google Earth became my friend as I began researching for a castle on the England/Scotland border. I was pleasantly surprised to find one had existed at Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
Berwick was first founded in the twelfth-century by the Scottish King David I. Around 1296, the English King Edward I rebuilt the castled and the town was fortified before returning it to Scotland. With the castle bordering both countries, its location was continually disputed by both England and Scotland making it the most important strongholds in the British Isles. Since Berwick was a major tactical objective in the area, the castle changed ownership over the centuries but also had substantial damage over the centuries.
But war was not the only way that Berwick changed hands. King Richard I sold the castle to the Scots to help fund the Third Crusade. As time passed, the castle finally fell back into English hands in August 1482.
By the sixteenth century, the construction of modern ramparts surround Berwick rendered the castle obsolete. It’s history made a steady decline from this point with large parts of the structure used as quarry. By the nineteenth century, the great hall and what remained of the castle was demolished in order to construct the Berwyck-Upon-Tweed railway station. The surviving part of the structure is the late thirteenth century White Wall and the steep steps known as Breakneck Stairs that are now administered by the English Heritage.
I had no idea at the time I began my research of what would follow as my writing progressed throughout the years. For whatever reason, I changed the spelling of the castle to Berwyck in order for me to have creative license to use it as I needed to fit my stories. Berwyck became the central hub for the world I created that even connected my Family of Worth Regency series. Berwick is on the top of my bucket list if I can ever get myself across the pond to see what remains of what was once a castle of great importance.

Excerpt
Yanking on the reins of his mount, Killian moved forward to stand before Ella. Looping the leather straps around the pommel, he offered her his assistance in order to mount the huge animal.
“May I, Lady Ella?” he inquired, holding out his hand to her.
She gave a weary sigh. There was no sense in attempting to remain indifferent to the orders he had been given. “If you must obey your lord, then I suppose I must too. But for heaven’s sake, please call me Ella.”
“’Tis not seemly ye should ask such of me, my lady.”
Her brow rose at his obstinacy. ’Twas most irritating and she preferred to forget the part of her past that made such a statement true. “I must insist. I do not profess to be a lady of high rank and refuse to be treated as such. I am just Ella.”
He turned his back on her momentarily, walking towards the ocean waves grumbling to himself about the stubbornness of some women. He returned with his decision. “If ye insist, then I must needs humor ye, I suppose. Let us away, Ella.”
“A wise choice, Sir Killian.”
“Just Killian,” he replied, and his eyes twinkled in suppressed merriment, as if he expected her to resist dropping all formality between them.
With a small smile, she nodded her head. “Killian, then.”
