Highlighting Historical Romance with Mageela Troche and some facts about Highland sheep.
The iconic image of the Scottish Highlands are the green hills dotted with fat, wooly sheep. The image of the sheep we see in that pastoral ideal would be different in my thirteenth century highlander romance, Highland Scandal.
Oh, they would still be sheep but we may not surprised by what we see.
The old Highland breed of sheep my hero, Lachlan Gordon, would have been raising and stealing are extinct. According to Highland Folk Ways by I.F. Grant states the highland sheep was “described as small; they weighed only about 15-20 pounds. They were sometimes white, dun, or parti-colored and had four to six horns and pink noses. Like Shetland and the Soay sheep they had short tails and prominent eyes.”
The old Highland breed were a delicate breed and were housed in sheep cotes at night and tethered during the day.
That research fact doesn’t sound terribly exciting. But I could just image these animals were the size of cats or dogs and were not doubt a feast for the Highland cat.
That isn’t the only reason it fascinates me. It holds a metaphor for history to me. As much as we evolve and develop new tools to help with our modern lives, there is so much all is still the same.
So, instead of saying “just another day” maybe we can say, “just another sheep in the highlands.”
